KIM HARTY
Kim Harty uses glass blowing, casting and coldworking to construct abstract forms inspired by natural biology. Her current Glass Anatomy Series contemplates reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy, mimicking organs, tissues and vascular systems to invoke both beauty and grotesqueness in life. Currently based in Detroit, Harty’s practice challenges established hierarchies of making, prioritizing historically absent feminist and queer approaches.
“In my work, I draw on my training as a glassblower to explore muscle memory, embodied cognition, and somatic knowing. I reference historical source material and draw inspiration from crafted objects. For me, a glass object’s material memory encapsulates a discrete moment in time.” -Artist Statement
