BRIAN D. SMITH

Brian D. Smith received his BFA in painting from Boston University and his MFA from the University of Chicago. He is currently the Professor of Visual Art and Visual Art Program Coordinator, St. Charles Community College, St. Peters, MO.

"The act of painting is a vital experience. My art explores themes of memory, process, and the suggestion of place. Striving for logic and unity in each piece, I utilize my responses to nature and my appreciation for the history of painting to evoke a dream-like world that is conspicuous and abstract. I create from an intuitive base, where bold shapes and colors predominate the compositional schemes of each painting. The relationship between unique forms sets the emotional tone for each work, while the sensuous qualities of paint create an array of arresting optical effects." - Artist Statement
