HARUMI NAKASHIMA
Harumi Nakashima, based in the port city of Nagoya Japan, creates stunning hand-built porcelain sculptures of incredible complexity and beauty. Taking great care to achieve a flawless surface and form, each piece is created over the course of six months.
A celebrated avante garde ceramicist, Nakashima is also a professor at the Aichi University of Education. Drawing inspiration from Picasso and European Surrealists, Harumi has forged a distinctive and unmistakable aesthetic that is internationally recognized.
Born in Gifu in 1950. He is a Member of the International Academy of Ceramics. After he graduated from Osaka University of Arts (majored in ceramics in the department of design) he worked for Tajimi City Pottery Design and Technical Center (Japan) from 1976 to 2003. From 2003 to 2016 he was a professor at Aichi University of Education. From 2016, he has been the director of Tajimi City Pottery Design and Technical Center.
In 1989 he won the Bronze Award in ceramic arts category for the 2nd International Ceramics Competition, Mino, Japan. In 1995, he won gold in the Ceramic Arts category for the 4th International Ceramics Competition, Mino, Japan, and in 2010 received the Japan Ceramics Society Award.
