Calvin Ma is a ceramic sculptor born and raised in San Francisco, California. He received his BA in Industrial Arts from San Francisco State University and MFA in sculpture from the Academy of Art University. His work has been exhibited in numerous national shows and awarded a number of accolades for his ceramic work. Calvin’s practice is both playful and adventurous, creating works that are rooted in childhood innocence and imagination. “My work draws inspiration from the toys and action figures I had growing up. As an introverted and socially awkward kid, the plastic heroes, villains and their vehicles helped me cope with my inability to socialize. Meeting new people, being in the company of strangers, crowds, peers and intermittently among friends and family brought about a heightened nervousness that took over and impeded my ability to function socially. Toys served as an escape for me then and remain a passion of mine. Now, as an introverted and socially awkward adult/artist, I create artwork that reflects on the struggles I still have with social anxiety. The toy element has become a visual influence in my artwork and in a way, still helping me cope.”
