A mark of paint, a decision, a choice; all are effected by their surrounds. They also affect their surrounds. A horizontal stroke of blue paint bisecting a vertical ochre stroke modifies both in their interaction, just as a particular experience can transform a person. Paint applied to a canvas, like experience, seeks and alters awareness, discovery, or questions. Continually successive combinations of moments, decisions, and marks gather to build a parinting or enrich an individual.

A blank canvas becomes active with repeated applications of paint much like a calm sea begins to ripple as it is caressed by a gust of wind. The wind affects the surface of water causing waves to follow the breeze, meeting and interacting with other waves and ripples shaped by yet another gust, possibly stronger. This interaction is et altered again from other waves formed by the force of wather perhaps hitting a shore and being driven back out to sea. In the edges of these immeasurable ripples, buoyant light reflects the surrounding color and relentlessly affects its own hue. A body of water is persistent in its movement, constantly changing like the repeated application of color as a painting develops.

Perchance, in the course of this movvement, this sustained action and these continual marks, there comes a reealing of what lies beneath the surface: a center or core steadily accumulating an infinite variety of experience. Perception is illuminated, if only for a moment, yet altered ever after. -Artist Statement, 2004
